Bone Grafting Is More Common Than You Think
What Causes the Need
for Bone Grafts Before Implants?
Our Dentist Has the Answer
"People think they have plenty of time to seek help for dental implants. What they don't realize is when the teeth are missing, that the body slowly resorbs bone over time. When [the bone] diminishes, we don't have enough width to place the implant in." Dr. Stewart
What Other Factors Can Affect My Bone Volume?
Many of our patients find out they need bone grafting when they attend a dental implant consultation at our Jackson, MS, practice. During a consultation, we conduct diagnostic imaging to assess the quality of your oral structures. Several factors are related to low bone density, including:
- Long-Term Tooth Loss
- Trauma to the Jaw
- Periodontal Disease
- Aging
- Genetics
Everything You Need to Know About Grafts and Implants
What is a dental implant?
Essentially, a dental implant is a post that acts as a replacement for your tooth's roots. When paired with an abutment, it can support a custom restoration, like a crown, bridge, or denture.
How long will I need to wait in between grafting and implant placement?
It usually takes about three to six months for a bone graft to make it possible to place implants. We will schedule implant placement for patients in the greater Jackson, Clinton, and Ridgeland areas after the new bone has fully integrated.
Will I need to go through this process again?
No, you likely won't. In most cases, the procedures are successful — and they won't need to be repeated in the same area. In fact, one of the biggest advantages of dental implants is the fact that with good care, they can last for a lifetime.

Grafting brings you one step closer to dental implants — and a healthy, beautiful smile.
What Is the Healing Process Like?
It's normal to experience some discomfort after bone grafting, especially in the first 48 hours following surgery. However, your pain levels should be mild enough to manage with over-the-counter medication or a low-dose prescription. You can expect some swelling and bruising in the treatment area that usually subsides in a few days. If you have questions or concerns at any time during your recovery, do not hesitate to contact our Jackson, MS, dental office. A team member will get back to you as soon as possible.

Depending on your bone loss, you may need an alternative type of graft. Some patients have experienced bone loss in a particular location in the upper jaw between the molars and premolars. In other patients, the sinus membranes are naturally too close to an implant site.
In these cases, you may need a special type of graft known as a sinus lift. During this procedure, the sinus membrane is lifted, and an allograft or your own grafting material is placed to make it possible to safely place an implant without disturbing the sinuses.

Are There Alternatives to Bone Grafting?
Many patients want to know if they can skip bone grafting before undergoing dental implant treatment. If you have suffered bone atrophy and are getting traditional dental implants, the answer is most likely "no." However, in cases of mild atrophy, we can often avoid the need for grafting by using an alternative procedure known as All-on-4®.
Instead of the standard six to eight implants per arch, All-on-4 supports a complete denture with just four strategically placed implant posts. Two of the implants are inserted at an angle into the jaw to gain the most support from the bone tissue you have left. Thanks to All-on-4, many patients can enjoy a full smile sooner.
