Tooth Extraction
Understanding Tooth Extraction
A tooth extraction involves your dentist removing a tooth from its socket. During a simple extraction, your tooth will be lifted out of place with dental tools. In complex cases, the tooth may first have to be separated into segments for easier removal.
Some patients worry about having a tooth extraction, but our team takes measures to ensure a safe and comfortable procedure. We can help eliminate your tooth pain and improve your oral health with this dental procedure.

View on GoogleWhy Would I Need a Tooth Extraction?
Typically, tooth extraction is only recommended by a dentist or oral surgeon when the damage can’t be fixed with restorative dentistry. You may need a tooth extraction if you have:
- Extensive trauma
- Advanced decay
- Persistent infection
- Overcrowding
- Wisdom teeth that are erupting incorrectly
- Periodontitis (advanced gum disease)
For a Safe Extraction You Can Rely on Our Dentists
Why Patients Across Mississippi Visit Us

Tooth extraction procedures range from $150 to $800, depending on the severity of the case. Dental insurance contributes to the cost of tooth extractions and our office accepts all types of insurance except PPO. If you don't have insurance, our Jackson, MS, office works with CareCredit® which allows patients to pay in monthly installments, making the procedure more affordable.
A Typical Extraction Procedure
We treat our patients the way we want to be treated – with the utmost care and precision.
Recovery Process
If your tooth extraction was simple, you can expect only minor discomfort in the following days. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, are usually enough to manage pain. Your doctor may also give you extra gauze to control bleeding from the site right after your procedure.
If your surgery was complex or you had your wisdom teeth removed, you may experience more pain and swelling at the extraction site. Dr. Roger B. Parkes and Dr. R. Clarke Stewart may prescribe a stronger prescription for the first few days, after which milder anti-inflammatories should be sufficient. You can also apply a cool compress to reduce swelling.
During your recovery period, avoid contact with the treatment site to prevent the blood clot from dislodging. Chew soft foods in other areas of your mouth, don’t drink through a straw, and avoid brushing around the extraction site.
My Tooth Has Been Extracted. What Happens Next?
Dental Implants
Dental implants are screws made of durable materials like titanium or ceramics. Implants fuse into your jawbone and gums to serve as artificial tooth roots. They can stay secure for the rest of your life, provided you take care of them properly. Patients must be in good oral health before a dentist or oral surgeon can place implants. While effective, implants take time. Implants have to undergo a process called osseointegration to fuse to your jaw. This can take three to six months.
Dental Crowns
Implants can secure a variety of dental restorations, ranging from bridges to dentures. In the case of a single extraction, we will likely place a single dental crown onto your dental implant. Crowns are lifelike caps that look just like your natural teeth. While crowns need to be replaced after several years, they are incredibly durable. Our dentists trust a skilled lab to craft custom crowns that blend in with your real teeth. After the crown is created, we can place it at our Jackson, MS, dentistry office.
Teeth in a Day
For many patients, waiting for osseointegration to finish can be stressful. Missing teeth can make it harder to eat, talk, or smile with ease. Teeth in a Day® is an innovative treatment that allows us to place a temporary crown during the same appointment that we secure an implant. We will contact a skilled laboratory to craft your permanent crown. When it is ready, you can return to our office, and we will attach your completed permanent crown.
Does a Tooth Extraction Hurt? FAQs About Tooth Extraction
Does a tooth extraction hurt?
Tooth extractions are a painless process, thanks to anesthesia. We provide local anesthesia to thoroughly numb the extraction site. Many patients choose to receive general anesthesia for more comprehensive surgeries, such as wisdom tooth removal or dental implant surgery. You'll find that tooth extraction helps resolve the pain caused by dental trauma or infection.
How long does bleeding last after tooth extraction?
Bleeding at the extraction site is expected. Bleeding should subside within a few minutes as a blood clot forms. However, everyone is different, and some patients may experience residual bleeding longer than others. You should see your doctor if residual bleeding lasts longer than 8-12 hours. Our team will give you information like this and other recovery tips before sending you on your way post-extraction.
Can tooth extraction cause TMJ disorder?
A tooth extraction does not guarantee that you'll develop a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder after the procedure. However, as your teeth shift to fill in the space left behind by the extracted tooth, your bite may become uneven, causing you to put unequal pressure on your TMJs and possibly develop a TMJ disorder. This concern is one of the reasons why we suggest patients restore their smile with dental implant surgery after tooth extraction. This solution excludes tooth extraction procedures performed to reduce crowding or extract wisdom teeth.
Do I need a bone graft after tooth extraction?
Not everyone requires a bone graft after tooth extraction, but our oral surgeons offer bone graft treatment if deemed necessary. A bone graft may need to be placed immediately after tooth extraction for socket preservation. The bone graft keeps the sides of the socket from caving in.
