Pinhole Gum Surgery

Treating advanced gum disease with traditional gum grafting surgery is an invasive procedure that often involves a painful recovery. Periodontal Associates of Jackson, P.A., uses the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique, an alternative that involves no incisions or sutures. We are proud to provide the benefits of pinhole gum surgery to patients in Jackson, Clinton, and Ridgeland, MS...

Am I a Good Candidate for the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique?

a closeup of severe gum recession
The thickness of your gum tissue, your level of control over chronic gum disease, and other factors will determine your candidacy for the pinhole surgical technique.

Receding gums can be caused by gum disease, poor oral hygiene, or aggressive tooth brushing. The condition can also develop as a result of hormonal changes, smoking, and aging. The only way to reverse the effects of gum recession is through traditional gum grafting treatments or the advanced Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique. You may qualify for pinhole gum surgery if you:

  • Have healthy gum tissue near the treatment site that is at least two millimeters thick
  • Have achieved control of chronic gum disease
  • Don't smoke
  • Don't grind your teeth
  • Don't have decay
  • Can commit to consistent brushing and flossing

During your consultation at our Jackson, MS, periodontal office, Dr. Roger Parkes and Dr. R. Clarke Stewart will carefully determine if you can benefit from undergoing the pinhole surgical technique instead of gum grafting.

I am so thankful to Dr. Roger Parks for making me smile. I have always disliked my gummy smile and his expertise was amazing. I didn’t know I could do anything about it until I came to Periodontics of Jackson. His staff is great and so was my experience!

How Much Does Pinhole Gum Surgery Cost?

Treating receding gum tissue with pinhole gum surgery costs about the same as traditional gum grafting, and both procedures qualify for at least partial coverage under many insurance plans. We accept all insurance, and you can count on our friendly staff to work with your provider to minimize any out-of-pocket expenses.

If you do not have insurance, or if your plan does not cover the total cost of treatment, we offer financing through CareCredit®. CareCredit is a healthcare-specific line of credit with financing terms ranging from six to 60 months. This third-party lender offers no-interest financing for up to 24 months to those who qualify. Our office team will gladly explain your financing options during your next visit to our Jackson, MS, office.

A Simpler Solution with the Same Outstanding Benefits

Our team can treat receding gums without sutures or large incisions by simply repositioning nearby healthy tissue.

What Happens during Pinhole Gum Surgery?

In most cases, it only takes about a day for the pinholes created during this gum treatment to heal.
In most cases, it only takes about a day for the pinholes created during this gum treatment to heal.
Before beginning, our doctors will ensure you are completely comfortable by administering a local anesthetic to completely numb the area receiving treatment.
One of our doctors will carefully insert a small needle in the gum tissue above the affected area to create a tiny hole. He can then place a special dental instrument through the hole and gently shift the soft underlying gum tissue to cover the recessed area.
Your doctor will use the pinhole technique to treat each tooth affected by gum recession.
He will stabilize your repositioned gum tissue by inserting tiny collagen strips through the pinhole.
The length of the procedure will depend upon the extent of treatment, but most treatments can be completed in about two hours. Some cases may require more than one treatment session.

Recovery & Aftercare

It is common to experience some swelling or tenderness in the gums for the first 24 hours after visiting our office. Since there is no need for a tissue graft, many patients experience an incredibly quick recovery - it only takes about a day for the pinholes created during this gum treatment to heal. It's easy to control any discomfort immediately following the procedure by using over-the-counter pain relievers and avoiding spicy, crunchy, and other abrasive foods. Each case is different, and Drs. Parkes and Stewart will help determine when you can get back to eating all of your favorite foods.

Greater Convenience & Lower Risk of Complications

This simple, streamlined recovery period is one of the main reasons why so many patients are turning to pinhole gum surgery to start a new chapter of excellent oral health in their lives, plus:

  • You won't have to worry about returning to our office to have sutures removed.
  • You won't have to feel self-conscious about how sutures will affect the appearance of your smile.
  • There is a far lower risk of infection since the procedure involves no incisions.

If your gums have started to recede due to periodontal disease or any reason, we invite you to reach out to our practice and learn more about how this sophisticated technique can put you on the fast track to a healthier smile.
