Is Periodontal Disease Contagious?

Anytime someone mentions the word “disease” we tend to immediately wonder if it is contagious. Many dental health issues are not “contagious” in the sense that, if you sit in a room with someone you are increasing your risk of cavities, but some diseases such as gum disease, are a little more complicated.

Gum disease is caused by bacteria that gets underneath the gums and cause an infection. The bacteria that cause gum disease can spread from one person to another if you come in contact with their saliva. To avoid these germs, do not share any spoons, forks, etc and you should also never share a toothbrush, even if that person does not have gum disease. Avoiding any contact with their saliva is the best way to not come in contact with these germs.
