You probably know what dental implants are, right? If you don’t, dental implants are metal posts that are placed under your gums and into your jawbone. When your implants are placed, your dentist or periodontist will be able to secure a replacement tooth or teeth to the implant. A dental implant and replacement tooth are a great way for people with bad oral health to achieve a beautiful and healthy smile.

So, what are mini dental implants?

You can probably guess by their name that mini dental implants are implants that are smaller than traditional dental implants. Mini dental implants are a great option for patients who have a weak or unhealthy jawbone. A mini dental implant will be inserted in the healthiest and strongest part of your jawbone with minimal impact and strain on the surrounding bone. Mini dental implants offer an easier procedure and quicker recovery times than traditional implants.

When comparing mini dental implants and traditional dental implants, the size is the big difference. Traditional implants are usually between 3.5-4.2 mm in diameter. In comparison, a mini dental implant will be between 2-3 mm in diameter. While smaller, a mini dental implant can still support many types of restorations, including a full denture.

What are advantages of mini dental implants?

If you opt to receive mini dental implants, you still need to care for these as if they were your real, natural teeth. Brushing, flossing, using mouthwash, and visiting your dentist is still imperative in keeping your implant and tooth restorations healthy.
