Gum Disease | A Connection to Pancreatic Cancer

Research and studies are always being conducted in the medical world. The information that is discovered can help us be healthier and live longer.

One such discovery came about through research conducted at Harvard University, the University of San Juan, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, which linked gum disease to pancreatic cancer. In fact, the study found that men who have a history of gum disease have an elevated chance of developing pancreatic cancer.

The study reviewed over 50,000 males ages 40 to 75. During a follow up period of sixteen years, 216 of these men, or 0.4%, developed pancreatic cancer. After taking several other factors into consideration, including tobacco usage, other health issues, obesity, and more, it was found that men with a history of gum disease have a 63% greater chance of developing pancreatic cancer. 

Unfortunately, while a relationship has been determined, there is currently no knowledge about what causes the relationship to exist.

While the majority of people understand the importance of oral health, many people do not take time to focus on the health of their gums. If you neglect your gums, gum disease will begin to develop. After developing, gum disease will not be able to be reversed, only treated. Gum disease has been linked to many other diseases, including diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.
